Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord.
In July 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. As he stepped onto the surface of the moon he said: “One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind… Good luck Mr. Grotsky!” Nobody understood that last phrase, and he was quizzed on its meaning relentlessly by all forms of media when he got back to earth – but he never explained himself. Only several decades later did he surprise his interviewer by saying he could answer the question – because Mr. Grostsky had now passed away. Armstrong recounted the story of when he was a young boy. He was playing ball with his friends and he hit the ball over a neighbour’s fence. He climbed over into the garden to retrieve the ball. As he did so, he saw Mr. and Mrs. Grotsky having a blazing argument. Mrs. Grotsky pointed to Armstrong and shouted to her husband: “The day you have sex with me will be the day that young man walks on the moon!”
Destiny is not a matter of chance, it’s a matter of choice. Life is a succession of choices we make – either consulting God in the process or going our own way. As a young man, Neil Armstrong was seemingly just another boy growing up with his friends. But he had a different destiny. One day he would step onto the moon and into history.
God has plans for each one of us. We all have a role to play. Sometimes it may not seem very glamorous, but the glamorous roles are usually overrated. As Vaclav Havel wrote: “The real test of a man is not when he plays the role that he wants for himself, but when he plays the role destiny has for him.”
Spend some time with God today, asking him if you’re on track and headed in the right direction.
Lord, I choose to live faithfully the role you’ve given me. Amen!
