1 Kings 18:21 “Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.”
More than five hundred people died on January 3rd, 1944, in a tragic incident which proved to be one of the worst train disasters in history. It happened in the El Toro Tunnel in Leon, Spain. The train in question was a long passenger train with engines on both ends. On a routine journey, the front engine stalled as the train entered the tunnel. The engineer at the front immediately started it again in order to proceed all the way through the tunnel. But in the meantime the rear engineer had started up his engine to lead the train backwards out of the tunnel. Both engines were pulling in opposite directions, with neither engineer knowing what the other was doing, and without means of communicating with each other. Each one simply thought they needed more power. In the meantime, the hundreds of passengers on the train in the tunnel died of carbon monoxide poisoning because the train couldn’t make up its mind which way to go.
The most uncomfortable position to be in is to want to follow Jesus just a little; to give him just a bit of my life; to know what is right and the direction he’s calling me in but to choose the guilt-ridden path that goes in the opposite direction. It’s the worst of both worlds because you can’t fully enjoy all the pleasures of sin and at the same time you know a journey on track with Jesus offers so much more.
Are you wavering today? Which areas of your life are marred by indecision, by holding back, by compromise? Jesus was very clear: “No-one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). And within the big spiritual battle that constitutes our lives, there are many mini-battles taking place in the areas of finance, relationships, motivation, and more.
Lord, I choose your high way, not my way, today. Amen!
