Psalm 53:1 “The fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God’.”
Sir Isaac Newton, one of the great scientists of the 17th century, once built a model of the solar system as part of his ongoing studies. An atheist friend came to see him and asked him who had made the model. “Nobody!” Newton replied. When his friend accused him of being ridiculous, Newton explained that if he had a problem with accepting that a model needed a maker, why have a problem when confronted with the real universe?
George Bernard Shaw was a regretful atheist, and mourned the folly of his own belief system: “The science to which I pinned my faith is bankrupt. I believed it once. In its name I helped destroy the faith of millions of worshippers in the temples of a thousand creeds. And now they look at me and witness the tragedy of an atheist who has lost his faith.”
It’s rare that atheists can be persuaded by verbal argument to change their position. What is more compelling than mere words is a changed life.
In the nineteenth century, an atheist called Charles Bradlaugh challenged a Christian minister, Hugh Price Hughes, to a debate about faith. Hughes agreed on the condition that each of them brought to the debate a hundred people whose lives had been positively changed by their commitment to their respective positions: either to Atheism or to Christianity. Hughes then lowered the requirement to fifty to appease Bradlaugh, and then to twenty, then to ten, and then to one. The debate never took place in the end, but the point was made…
