Work or Worship?

Revelation 4:10,11 “The twenty four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power.”

What a vision! When Handel was asked what inspired him to write the Messiah, he said: “I saw the heavens opened and God upon his great white throne.” Dear God, grant us similar glimpses of your glory!

Tozer highlights the primacy of worship and laments how quickly it gets displaced: “We take a convert and immediately make a worker out of him. God never meant it to be so. God meant that a convert should learn to be a worshipper, and after that he can learn to be a worker. The work done by a worshipper will have eternity in it.” Oswald Chambers adds: “Beware of anything that compares with loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of devotion to Jesus is service for Him… The one aim of the call of God is the satisfaction of God, not a call to do something for Him.”

I fear we get too busy to be good worshippers. How slow we are to learn that although we have direct access to God, we can’t worship effectively if we only give him the dregs of our time. Worship needs to be intentional. All the deepest and most profound experiences of worship in my life have come when I’ve dedicated time, space and energy to pursuing God. Do we have our priorities right? Chuck Swindoll has commented that we’re guilty of playing at worship, worshiping work and working at play. Acceptable worship involves the whole person in a humble attitude of dependence on God, acknowledging the ‘worth-ship’ of our Creator and Sustainer.

Lord, I choose to make time to worship you today. You are worthy of all praise and adoration. Take me deeper. May all my work for you be done as a worshipper first and foremost. Amen!
