1 Chronicles 21:19 “So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.”
Obedience is seldom convenient. It usually means doing something in submission to someone else’s will or desire. During David’s life, he sought God’s heart in obedience, even when it was inconvenient, even when the pressures were overwhelming, even when he wanted to quit.
King Henry III of Bavaria understood King David’s pressures. In the 11th century, Henry got to the stage where he couldn’t handle the pressures of court life, so he applied to Prior Richard at a local monastery to take him in to spend the rest of his life in prayer and contemplation. “Your majesty,” said Prior Richard, “do you understand that the pledge here is one of obedience? That will be hard because you have been a king.” “I understand,” said Henry. “The rest of my life I will be obedient to you, as Christ leads you.” “Then I will tell you what to do,” said Prior Richard. “Go back to your throne and serve faithfully in the place where God has put you.”
When King Henry died, a plaque was engraved: “The king learned to rule by being obedient.”
There are some difficult and draining days when I just want to throw in the towel and give up my responsibilities. The grass is always greener so maybe another career will be easier, more fruitful or more fulfilling. You could be the same, and it could be your job or your marriage or whatever other role or responsibility you’re tiring of. Hang on though! Remember God calls us to obedience, not convenience. He didn’t say it would be easy, but he did promise to be with us every step of the way. Don’t do anything rash. Pray it through. Seek counsel. Walk the path of obedience with him today.
Lord, I choose to live a life of obedience to you, even when it’s inconvenient. Amen!
