John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
When Pope Julius I authorized December 25th to be celebrated as the birthday of Jesus in A.D. 353, nobody could have foreseen what it would become in our day. And then when Professor Charles Follen lit candles on the first Christmas tree in America in 1832, nobody in their wildest dreams could have imagined how elaborate the decorations would become in our day. It is a long time since 1832, longer still since 353, and even longer still since that dark night was brightened by a guiding star that led the shepherds to King Jesus’ humble birthplace. Yet as we approach December 25th again, amidst all the excitement, decorations, and commercialization, let’s be very intentional in keeping Christ at the centre. Let’s pause to reflect and worship God as we consider afresh the outlandish Christmas story of His rescue plan for humanity by actually taking on flesh and blood.
In December 1903, after many failed attempts to get their ‘flying machine’ off the ground and into the air, Orville and Wilbur Wright were successful for the first time at Kitty Hawk. Elated at their accomplishment, they telegraphed the following message to their sister Katherine: “We have actually flown 120 feet. Will be home for Christmas.” Katherine hurried to the editor of the local newspaper and showed him the message. He glanced at it and said: “How nice! The boys will be home for Christmas.” He totally missed the big news – that for the first time in human history, man had flown!
How many of our loved ones, colleagues, and friends are completely missing the big news! Jesus’ words above provide comfort for us but also a warning for those who remain in darkness. How desperate it will be if they ignorantly remain in darkness! Choose today to overcome your fear, pride or self-consciousness and share with them the ‘reason for the season’.
Lord, give me the boldness to make and take opportunities to share your story today. Amen!
