Clumsy or Sophisticated?

Song of Songs 1:2 “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.”

Several years ago, I wrote the following in a prayer letter to supporters:

“Zac is ten months old, and growing fast. As of last week, he started to consciously wave goodbye to people. The latest development which has brought such joy to Lizzie and I is when I say to him: ‘Zac, give me a kiss!’ and he lurches forward clumsily and head-butts me on the lips! This morning he joined me in worshiping the Lord with the guitar. He’s definitely a budding charismatic, waving both hands in the air with ecstatic squeals!

As we worshipped together, it made me think of the Greek word for worship. It’s ‘proskuneo’, and means literally ‘to lean forward and kiss’. Such is the intimacy our Heavenly Father desires with us. I’ll be honest and tell you there are times – plenty of them – when I look at the problems around me and get totally discouraged, almost sinking in despair. I’ve felt like that in the last few weeks. I can talk a good game most of the time, but it hurts to deliver the goods. We get wounded and bruised and tired and disillusioned and broken and discouraged. Intimacy with God? I want to be in that place, but it’s frequently elusive – and in any case, feelings are often deceptive – the best proof of our love for God is obedience…

…Sometimes I know I’m lazy and disobedient, and I need a kick up the backside. Other times I know I gave it my best shot, even if it wasn’t great. I obeyed. When Zac leans forward and headbutts me on the lips, I respond by kissing and cuddling and squeezing him closely. The love I feel is quite overwhelming. And I sense my Heavenly Father receiving my worship in the same way, even if my best efforts resemble a clumsy badly-aimed head-butt!”

God sees your heart, he knows you completely, and he loves you. Lean in and head-butt him today!

Lord, receive my clumsy heartfelt adoration. Amen!
