Needs or Greeds?

Philippians 4:19 “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

I wish verse 19 promised that God would meet all my ‘wants’, but no, it says ‘needs’ – he will meet all my (and your) needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. You can be sure of that. It’s a comfort to know that he sees what we’re going through and knows what we need. Trust him today.

Dr Helen Roseveare was a missionary in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, across the lake from me. She tells of a young mother dying at the mission station shortly after having given birth prematurely. The medical staff needed a makeshift incubator for the premature baby, but the only hot water bottle they had leaked. During team prayers that morning, the children were asked to pray for the baby and her little sister who was now orphaned. So one young girl prayed: “Dear God, please send a hot water bottle today. Tomorrow will be too late because by then the baby will be dead. And, dear Lord, send a doll for the sister so she won’t feel so lonely.” Although parcel deliveries were rare, a large one did arrive that afternoon. They opened it and were overjoyed to find a hot water bottle! The little girl who had prayed so earnestly pounced on the parcel and rummaged amongst the contents, exclaiming: “If God sent that, I’m sure he also sent a doll.” She was right! A beautiful doll was there, in response to the little girl’s petition. Five months earlier, the Sovereign Lord had prompted a group of ladies to pack a parcel of just the right things to arrive on just the right day in just the right place – a remote mission station in Africa thousands of miles away! What perfect timing! God surely holds the whole world in his hands!

Few stories of God’s provision are that dramatic, but how about learning that verse today, and standing on its promise for the rest of your life. I have, and I’m still standing!

Lord, I choose to take you at your word today. You see my needs. Amen!
