Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
During the Holocaust, prisoners in concentration camps would usually be worked to exhaustion, and eventually executed once they couldn’t contribute to the cause anymore. One couple had two children, one of whom was severely mentally disabled. The father worked each day separately from the others, and when he returned one night he found only his healthy son. “What happened?” he asked. The surviving child told how the guards had decided to execute his brother as he wasn’t doing anything productive. The latter had sobbed and grabbed his mother’s skirt. She said: “Don’t be afraid. I’ll go with you.” And they walked hand in hand peacefully into the gas chamber.
David in Psalm 23 knew that the Lord was his shepherd and would always take care of his sheep, even in the valley of the shadow of death. However dark and desperate our circumstances may seem, God promises to go through them with us. As D.L.Moody said: “The valley of the shadow of death holds no darkness for the child of God. There must be light, else there could be no shadow. Jesus is the light. He has overcome death.”
My little kids recently started a new school in a new country in a new language. I was so concerned on their behalf. So we began learning some key verses together which we went through on our way to school: 1 John 4:4 “The one who is in me is greater than the one who is in the world”, Psalm 118:6 “The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. What can people do to me?” Difficult times, but they got through.
Remember you are never alone. “I will never leave you, I will never forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5)
Lord Jesus, thank you that you accompany me in every situation. Give me confidence today to walk with you. Amen!
