Inner or Outer?

1 Samuel 16:7 “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearances but the Lord looks at the heart.”

www.beautifulpeople.com was hacked recently. It’s a website for beautiful people. There is a strict rating process enforced by members to keep ugly people out. The screening process failed for a short while because of the glitch, and 30,000 ‘ugly’ people were wrongly admitted to the site. Managing Director Greg Hodge said: ‘We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting. We have sincere regret for the unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site and who believed, albeit for a short while, that they were beautiful. It must be a bitter pill to swallow, but better to have had a slice of heaven than never to have tasted it at all.’”

How do we get sucked in by such piffle?! That outward beauty won’t last. Their different body parts will sag, wrinkle, fall out, change colour, no matter how much they try to arrest their decline! 2% of Western women are happy with their bodies. How tragic is that? And it’s because we buy into the lies of advertising that define us by such shallow superficial external criteria. And men preening themselves like cocks in front of the mirror in the gym, you make me laugh! Wake up, beauty is way deeper!

If some of us put as much effort into our inner being as we do into our outer shell, we’d be a whole lot more meaningfully beautiful. As Elizabeth Ross wrote: “People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

Lord, free me from society’s crass definition of beauty to live a beautiful life that points others to you. Amen!
