Romans 11:36 “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen!”
There’s a beautiful worship song by Paul Oakley called ‘It’s all about you’. The words go on: “And all this is for you, for your glory and your fame…” In a lively worship service, a friend of mine was sat next to a young man who had his hands raised and eyes shut and was belting out the song which he obviously knew off by heart – well almost – he just mixed up the personal pronouns, so his passionate rendition included: “It’s all about meeeeee (long note), and all this is for meeeeee, for my glory and my fame!” Ironically, he was probably the most honest person in the house, because it’s hard to displace the meeeee and really keep it all about Jesus. I know I’ve been guilty, if not literally of singing it, of living like it’s all about me.
Elyse Fitzpatrick wrote: “Whenever the gospel slips from our conscious thought, our religion becomes all about our performance, and then we think everything that happens or will ever happen is about us. When I forget the incarnation, sinless life, death, resurrection, and ascension, I quickly believe that I’m supposed to be the unrivaled, supreme, and matchless one. It’s at this point that I’m particularly in need of an intravenous dose of gospel truth. He is preeminent.”
So here’s a dose of gospel truth: there is a God, and it’s not me. It’s all about Jesus, not all about me. Whilst we matter, we’re not the point. I am blessed to be a blessing. His death brings me life, and life to the full. He is the bread of life, the light of the world, the gate, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth and the life, and the vine. Those are Jesus seven ‘I AM’s from John’s gospel. He is, I’m not.
Thank God for that! Here’s to living in the light of those truths.
Lord, help me to live like it’s all about you today, Amen!
