Leviticus 20:7 “Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God.”
D.L. Moody was an evangelist from Chicago. He wasn’t highly educated, but he had a passion for souls. Before he came to England, in the summer of 1872, he knew that he would have to shake London in order to have a fruitful time throughout the rest of the land. This was of course before the age of easy mass communication. I used to cycle across London Bridge each day on my way to Bible College and wonder how on earth you could shake London with the gospel. In a similar vein, his contemporary, Charles Spurgeon, had written: “Give me twelve men – importunate men, lovers of souls, who fear nothing but sin and love nothing but God – and I will shake London from end to end.” At any rate, Moody did shake London, or rather, God did through Moody and the whole of England on the back of it.
It is estimated he led a million people to Christ throughout several decades of relentless preaching on both sides of the Atlantic. On one occasion, earlier on in his life, he was talking to a man named Henry Varley. Varley said: “You know, D.L. (as he was known to his friends), the world has yet to see what God will do with one man fully consecrated to Him.” Moody thought about it. “The world has yet to see what God will do with one man. Any man? Doesn’t have to have a great education? Any man… fully consecrated to Him.” That was the condition – full consecration to the Lord. He continued to mull it over, and finally he concluded: “By the grace of God, I’ll be that man!”
There’s so much holding us back from full consecration. What comes to mind in your life? Wrestle with it. What’s it worth, really? And then hopefully, having counted the cost, choose to join Moody in saying: “By the grace of God, I’ll be that man!”
I choose to consecrate myself fully to you today, O Lord, Amen!
