Romans 8:31 “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
The legendary Michael Jordan was no deity, but on the basketball court in one particular game he was as close to perfection as anyone has ever got. On 28th March 1990, he scored a staggering 69 points against the Cavaliers at the Richfield Coliseum. He himself always considered it his greatest ever performance. On his team that day was a relatively unknown bench-warmer called Stacey King. King hardly got any playing time, but in the few minutes he was on court, he scored one free throw. Years later, when King retired after a somewhat less distinguished career than Jordan, he was asked what his career highlight was. He replied: “My highlight was the night Michael Jordan and I scored 70 points!”
An ant was nestled behind the ear of an elephant as they approached a rickety rope bridge. They gingerly made their way across it, fearing plunging into the ravine below. It creaked and swayed, but thankfully they made it safely across, at which point the ant whispered into the elephant’s ear: “Wow, did you see how we really shook that bridge?!”
Isn’t the above verse a comforting thought? I mean, God is on our team – or rather we are on his. He doesn’t need us, but he chooses to use us. He’s the real points-scorer and bridge-shaker. Sometimes we delude ourselves and try to take all the credit, but hopefully both Stacey King and the ant (and us in turn) recognize deep down that the positive result wasn’t principally down to them or us. God is the one who really makes things happen. We get to partner with him. He takes ultimate responsibility and gets ultimate glory. In the best sense of the word, we’re hangers-on!
So let’s enjoy the privilege, give it our best shot, play our part, and give him the glory today.
