1 Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of faith.”
How aware are you there’s a fight to be fought, and how engaged are you in it? John Piper wrote: “Life is a war. That is not all it is, but it is always that.” Soren Kierkegaard talked of the many parade-ground Christians who wear the uniforms of Christianity, whilst only few are willing to do battle for Christ and his kingdom. Too many church members, oblivious to the battle going on, are just sitting on the premises instead of leaning on the promises of God.
One night in an area steeped in witchcraft, I woke up petrified with an oppressive spiritual presence in my room. I rebuked it in Jesus’ name, and went back to sleep. In the morning, my hosts asked me if I’d slept well. “Nobody sleeps well on their first night. There’s so much witchcraft directed at us that we have to be praying.” My context is different from yours, but make no mistake, we’re all in a battle. But are we playing our part?
The 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were dropped behind enemy lines before the Allies launched their D-Day offensive towards the end of the Second World War. Their job was to cut off Hitler’s reinforcements, and what transpired amongst them included stories of incredible heroism, but also deep cowardice. All of them jumped, but whilst some fought heroically, others found places to hide out – and one group discovered a wine cellar and got totally drunk. All of them knew they were at war, but the latter refused to stand up and fight.
Which is your part – sitting on the premises or leaning on the promises? In dangerous denial, or fully engaged?
Lord, help me not to be complacent in how I live out my faith journey. I choose to be alert and fully engaged in the spiritual battle going on. Guide me today as I seek to serve you. Amen!
