John 1:42 “Andrew brought him to Jesus.”
We don’t hear much about Andrew in the gospels, apart from the fact that he was always busy behind the scenes bringing people to Jesus (6:8;12:22), whilst his brother, Simon Peter, was much more high profile as the upfront leader of the early church. Much as many of us would like to gain kudos and credit, we can’t all be Simon Peters, but we can all do what Andrew did – we can bring people to Jesus.
Albert McMakin was a 24-year-old farmer who had become a follower of Jesus. He was so excited by his faith that whenever possible he would fill his truck with people to take them to the latest outreach to hear the gospel. There was one neighbouring farmer’s son who was very resistant to his invitations. He was good-looking and was constantly falling in and out of love with the local ladies, who proved a greater draw than evangelistic meetings. Eventually, Albert managed to talk this young man into coming by asking him to drive the truck. They arrived at the church and Albert was thrilled that his reluctant guest decided to go in. The gospel presentation convicted the young man to his core, and he came back night after night before taking the plunge and giving his life to Christ. The year was 1934. The young driver of the truck was Billy Graham. Nobody led more people to the Lord in the twentieth century than him.
Choose to be an Andrew today. You don’t have to be confident. You don’t have to have all the answers. Just be the authentic you and allow God to use you. I remember being turned down and ‘wasting’ time walking across town to pick-up a similarly reluctant young man to take to a meeting who stood me up, but who did eventually respond to a later invitation and is now an active fisher of men. You received an invitation and accepted it – now get offering it to others!
Lord, use me today, this week, this month, to bring someone to Jesus. Amen!
