Giant or Grasshopper?

Numbers 13:33 “There we saw the giants, and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” (NKJV)

When the twelve spies went to check out the Promised Land, they all saw the same things. They all saw the huge fruit, the huge walls and the huge men! The only difference was in their attitudes. Ten were fearful, two were fearless! Caleb’s attitude was: “Let’s go take them down!” He had faith in his God and himself to get the job done. The trouble was that the rest of the people heard the bad report and were scared. They listened to the fearful ones and not the faith-filled ones. They tested God’s patience and ended up in the wilderness for another 40 years.

How many opportunities do we miss because we look through eyes of fear and not faith? Similar to the Israelites when confronted by Goliath, they and David had two options: they chose to look at Goliath through the eyes of man and saw he was too big to beat, whilst David looked at him through the eyes of God and saw he was too big to miss.

Christopher Reeve, the actor who played Superman, was paralysed from the neck down in a horse-riding accident in 1995. After his accident, he made this comment: “When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked, ‘What is a hero?’ I remember the glib response I repeated so many times. My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences – a soldier who crawls out of a foxhole to drag an injured buddy to safety. Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

What are you up against today? Choose to find your strength, perseverance and endurance from God, so that you likewise will enter your Promised Land.

Lord, help me live by faith today, knowing with you I can do whatever you call me to. Amen!
