Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Is life a problem to be solved or an adventure to be lived?
One of my cycling adventures took me all the way around Burundi with nine other men. We knew the end point, and were always working towards it, but the purpose of the trip was so much bigger than the final destination – it was to raise money for a school, to share Christ along the way, to spend time together, to observe the stunning scenery, to experience both laughs and tears in the highs and the lows, to battle through injury, sickness, tiredness and bad winds. How absurd it would have been to ignore the other team members, ignore the beauty, and just keep our heads down in gritty concentration until we crossed the finishing line!
And yet, sometimes we live life that way.
It’s easy to set up camp and call it home. But that stops the flow of the journey. Life is a process, with completion further down the road. We do want completion at the journey’s end, but in the meantime ambiguity and uncertainty are part of the adventure to be embraced.
As we journey with Jesus, the above verse assures us he ‘will carry it on to completion’. Don’t push ahead of him. Enjoy the moment. Today. With others. Don’t rush, always looking ahead. Enjoy your children at this stage of their development, not looking forward to another. Enjoy your friends, your health, your job, your current challenges. Ditch the problem solving and choose to live the adventure fully today!
Lord, I choose to embrace life as an adventure today. Thank you that you accompany me every step of the journey, and that you promise to bring it all to completion. Amen!
